When to use which

Use PSI (pounds per square inch)

Use PSI for US tires, hydraulic systems and most consumer products.

Use Bar

Use bar for European spec sheets, scientific work, and high-pressure systems (steam, espresso, dive gear).

Historical context

The bar was introduced in 1909 by the meteorologist Vilhelm Bjerknes and deliberately sized to sit close to atmospheric pressure at sea level, which is 1.01325 bar. That makes it convenient to think in: one bar is roughly the air around you. It is defined as exactly 100,000 pascals, so it is a decimal multiple of the SI unit without being an SI unit itself. Pounds per square inch grew instead out of imperial engineering practice and is exactly what its name says — a force in pounds spread over a square inch. One bar is 14.5038 psi, and standard atmospheric pressure is 14.6959 psi. Both survive because their user bases barely overlap: American tyre gauges, hydraulics and plumbing are overwhelmingly in psi, while European vehicle manuals, diving equipment and most industrial machinery are in bar. Scientific work uses neither, preferring the pascal or its kilopascal multiple.

Practical recommendation

Use bar if your audience or equipment is European, psi if it is American, and pascals if the work is scientific or the figure will enter a calculation alongside other SI units. The practical caution is tyre pressures, where the two are close enough to be mistaken for one another and far enough apart to matter: 2.5 bar is 36.3 psi, not 2.5 psi. Also check whether a gauge reads absolute or gauge pressure, since a gauge reading zero is really sitting at about one bar of atmosphere.
