Byte (B)

Unit1 b equals
Bit (b)1
Byte (B)0.125
Kilobyte (KB)0.000125
Megabyte (MB)1.25e-7
Gigabyte (GB)1.25e-10
Terabyte (TB)1.25e-13
Petabyte (PB)1.25e-16
Kibibyte (KiB)0.00012207
Mebibyte (MiB)1.19209e-7
Gibibyte (GiB)1.16415e-10
Tebibyte (TiB)1.13687e-13

How it works

Examples
  • 1 GB = 1,000 MB (decimal)
  • 1 GiB = 1,073,741,824 bytes (binary)
  • 1 TB = 1000 GB

Frequently asked

What's the difference between GB and GiB?

GB uses powers of 10 (1,000³); GiB uses powers of 2 (1,024³).

Where you'll actually use this

Data storage units measure information — bits, bytes, and their multiples. The catch: decimal (kB = 1,000 B) and binary (KiB = 1,024 B) systems both exist and are often confused.

  • Cloud storage & quotas

Providers usually quote storage in GB (decimal). Operating systems often report in GiB (binary), which is why a '1 TB' drive shows up as ~931 GiB.

  • Network bandwidth

Internet speeds are quoted in Mbps (megabits per second), not MB/s. Divide by 8 to get download MB/s.

  • Media files

Video bitrates, photo file sizes, and database row counts all need fluent byte-multiple conversion.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Bits vs bytes

    Lowercase b = bit, uppercase B = byte. 1 byte = 8 bits. 100 Mbps ≠ 100 MB/s.

  • MB vs MiB

    1 MB = 1,000,000 B. 1 MiB = 1,048,576 B. The difference grows the larger you go — about 10% at the TB/TiB level.

Did you know?

Why drives 'lose' space

Drive makers use decimal GB (1,000³). Operating systems show binary GiB (1,024³). A 1 TB drive really is 1 TB — just 931 GiB.
